NEW YORK STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO AWARD OVER $535 MILLION
FOR MEDICAL CARE AMONG LOW-INCOME PATIENTS IN NASSAU COUNTY

NEW YORK (JUNE 26, 2015) – Dr. Victor F. Politi, President/CEO of Nassau University Medical Center, will be joined by New York State and Nassau County officials to announce over $535 million in funding to improve health care for low-income patients, Monday June 29, 2015 at 12 pm at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, NY.    NUMC would receive the funding over the next four years if the hospital successfully reduces non-emergency visits for Medicaid and uninsured patients under the state’s Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment Program.

The payment program will generate over $7 billion in federal funding for hospitals, community health clinics, nursing homes, primary care doctors, substance abuse treatment centers, pharmacies and other organizations across New York State. The more than $535 million Nassau University Medical Center is slated to receive, the fourth-largest amount in the state, would be in exchange for keeping low income patients who use Medicaid or have no health insurance out of the emergency room.  Most cases would require more preventive treatment in chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes as well as alcohol and drug rehabilitation.

NUMC is partnering with North Shore-LIJ Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island as well as over 8,000 clinics, social service agencies, community organizations, insurance providers and physicians to implement the programs.
