John Riggs, Md, Appointed Numc’s Chairman Of Ob/Gyn

JOHN RIGGS, MD, APPOINTED NUMC’S CHAIRMAN OF OB/GYN

EAST MEADOW, NY….Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, announced the appointment of John Riggs, MD, as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC).  In his new role as OB/GYN chairman, Dr. Riggs will apply his skills for the oversight, guidance, and performance improvement support for all hospital wide women’s services programs and activities at NUMC. His specialties include urogynecology, pelvic reconstructive surgery and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.

“The recruitment of Dr. Riggs, an outstanding clinician with a terrific track record of success in many leadership roles, fits very well within our health system and will take our hospital to the next level in advancing our mission of providing quality women’s services to Nassau’s diverse communities,” said Dr. Politi.  “He brings an outstanding reputation, which when added to our existing team of attending OB/GYN physicians, will enhance services for all women in Nassau County.”

NUMC’s acting medical director, Victor Scarmato, MD, added: “We are delighted to welcome a physician of Dr. Riggs’ caliber to NuHealth/NUMC System.  He brings a wealth of experience and his clinical and research expertise will be of tremendous benefit to the patients that we serve.”

Dr. Riggs joined the Nassau University Medical Center in August 2015 as chairman of the OB/GYN department. He is originally from Haddonfield in southern New Jersey. He attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. for undergraduate and medical school education and completed his residency in OB/GYN at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. From 1989-1999, he worked with his father, Joseph, in private practice in Haddon Heights, New Jersey where they specialized in advanced gynecologic surgery.

After his father/partner retired, Dr. Riggs moved to NYC and joined the staff of Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn. Over the next 15 years, he held multiple positions at Wyckoff: director- gynecology and urogynecology, director- women’s health center, chairman- OB/GYN, President- medical staff, and President- medical board. He subsequently practiced for 3 years at Brooklyn Hospital in general OB/GYN. Dr. Riggs is currently clinical chair of OB/GYN at the American University in Antigua (AUA). He is also an active member of the American Medical Association, American College of OB/GYN, United Healthcare credentials committee, Georgetown University medical alumni board and board of governors. His interests include all sports, weightlifting, and traveling.

Dr. Riggs, upon his appointment as chair of OB/GYN at NUMC, stated: “I am very happy and excited to assume my new role as the chairman of the OB/GYN department at NUMC and look forward to working with an outstanding administration and medical staff to continue providing quality women’s services.”
