HIMSS Analytics Honors Nassau University Medical Center with Stage 6 Recognition for Electronic Medical Records Achievement

East Meadow, NY…July 27, 2015 – HIMSS Analytics announced that Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has achieved Stage 6 on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM). NUMC is a 530 bed Level I trauma center and teaching hospital serving Nassau’s most vulnerable populations.

Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC President/CEO, congratulated hospital staff on achieving Stage 6: “We have made significant executive commitments and investments to reach this stage, providing us with significant advantage for patient safety, better patient care with the electronic medical record, clinician support, clinician recruitment and competitive marketing for both consumers and nurse recruitment.” Dr. Politi added: “Thanks to the commitment of our staff, NUMC has almost fully automated paperless medical records in our emergency department and is striving to transform our medical record into an electronic one across our other clinical settings.”

As of July 2015, 24 percent of the more than 5400 US hospitals tracked by HIMSS Analytics had reached Stage 6, with 1304 US hospitals, including NUMC, having achieved Stage 6. HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database.  Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), hospitals can review the implementation and utilization of information technology applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.

David Ng, interim chief medical informatics officer and associate chair of the emergency department at NUMC, indicated: “Congratulations to NUMC’s staff, especially Farooq Ajmal, VP of IT and CIO and Robert Dulak, director of Allscripts IT,  for leading the way towards healthcare IT adoption that improves patient care.  This distinction of achieving Stage 6 honors our organization’s accomplishments to implement technology solutions that have the ability to improve patient safety and quality of care.”

Stage 6 hospitals also have achieved a significant advancement in their IT capabilities that positions them to successfully address many of the current industry transformations, such as meaningful use criteria in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, claims attachments for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, pay for performance, and government quality reporting programs.

“HIMSS Analytics congratulates NUMC for leading the way toward health IT adoption,” said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive VP, HIMSS Analytics. “Stage 6 represents a level of sophistication that only 1304 US Hospitals, including NUMC, have reached to date.”
