NUMC Excels in Patient Safety—Awarded an “A” in Both Spring and Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score

East Meadow, NY……….October 29, 2015 – Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, President/CEO of the NuHealth System/NUMC, announces that the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has achieved an “A” score in hospital safety, only one of seven LI hospitals to receive the top score and only one of three hospitals in Nassau County. Safety deals with protecting patients by reducing infections and reducing preventable errors, focusing on avoiding bad events and making it less likely that mistakes happen.

Designed to rate how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, prevent errors, injuries and reduce infections, the latest Hospital Safety Score honored NUMC with an “A” – its top grade in patient safety. This is the fourth consecutive top award for NUMC. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group (Leapfrog), an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay. Of the 2530 hospitals issued a Hospital Safety Score, 133 hospitals, including NUMC, have earned an “A” twice this year.

“Receiving an “A” Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group is wonderful news for NUMC’s staff as achieving an “A” requires a tremendous amount of dedicated work from the entire hospital staff and a real commitment to safety as the main priority for all our patients,” stated Dr. Politi. “On behalf of our Board of Directors, I commend every employee for this notable achievement and commitment to overall patient safety.”

“Taking a deeper look at the 133 ‘Straight A’ hospitals reveals a diverse group, similar only in their consistent commitment to patient safety. Hospitals from across the country, with 100 beds to over 750 beds, non-profit and for-profit alike received this top honor,” said Leah Binder, president & CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which issues the Hospital Safety Score. “No matter how large or small, no matter what kind of community they serve, all hospitals have the potential to give their patients this high level of safe care.”
