NUMC Psychiatry Department’s von Tauber Institute Honors Eminent Cultural Psychiatry Scholar Francis G. Lu, MD

East Meadow, NY…………On Wednesday, November 12, the von Tauber Institute for Global Psychiatry, a research arm of NuHealth’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will honor Francis G. Lu, MD, with the third annual von Tauber Award for Global Psychiatry, in recognition of his outstanding service and accomplishments in cultural psychiatry. At the ceremony in the NUMC Amphitheater at 1:00 PM, NUMC Psychiatry Chair and von Tauber Institute Director Dr. Nyapati Rao will present the award to Dr. Lu.  Following the award, Dr. Lu will present Psychiatry Grand Rounds on:
Cultural Issues in Diagnosis and Formulation: 
From DSM-IV to DSM-V
In addition to the celebratory event, Dr. Lu will teach NuHealth residents, fellows, and faculty at a clinical case conference in the morning.

Francis G. Lu, M.D., is the Luke & Grace Kim Endowed Professor in Cultural Psychiatry, Emeritus, in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Before retiring from UC, he was Director of Cultural Psychiatry and Associate Chair for Medical Student Education. He was also Assistant Dean for Faculty Diversity, UC Davis School of Medicine. Previously, Dr. Lu was Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Director of the Cultural Competence and Diversity Program, Department of Psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), where he had worked from July 1977 to June 2009. Dr. Lu has participated on expert panels and advisory committees on diversity, cultural competence, and mental health disparities sponsored by the Office of the Surgeon General, HHS Office of Minority Health, HRSA, SAMHSA Center for Mental Health Services, the California Endowment, the Templeton Foundation, and many other national psychiatry organizations.
