Paul Mustacchia, MD, FACP, MBA, Appointed Chairman of Department of Medicine at NUMC

East Meadow, NY………Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, announced that Paul Mustacchia, MD, FACP, MBA, has been appointed to assume the responsibilities of chairman of the department of medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center. Previously, Dr. Mustacchia served as acting chair of the department of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at NUMC.

“We are delighted that a physician with Dr. Mustacchia’s leadership qualities and expertise in the field of medicine will be taking over the responsibilities of leading the medicine department and overseeing all the specialty divisions within the department, long a training ground for physicians and allied professionals,” said Dr. Politi. “Dr. Mustacchia will be an exceptional leader among our team of attending medicine specialists, building on our quality of care and patient safety focus.”

Focused on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases affecting adults, internal medicine is one of the hospital’s busiest departments. Subspecialists are frequently called upon by physicians both inside and out of Nassau University Medical Center to help solve the most complex diagnostic puzzles, including those where multiple illnesses or multiple organs are involved. In addition to helping patients manage a broad range of acute and chronic illnesses on an outpatient basis, NUMC’s internal medicine subspecialists are on the frontline of inpatient care. The department of medicine encompasses numerous divisions, including critical care, endocrinology, gastroenterology, oncology, hospitalist medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, palliative care, pulmonary and rheumatology. The department of medicine also directly sponsors a large internal medicine residency training program; and, subspecialty training programs in gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, pulmonary critical care and hematology oncology.

Dr. Victor Scarmato, acting medical director, congratulated Dr. Mustacchia on his new appointment: “Dr. Mustacchia brings a wealth of knowledge and experience which will be an asset in assuming his new responsibilities, affording him the unique opportunity to lead his department in demonstrating a commitment to a culture of patient safety and elevating the standard of health care for the residents of Nassau County.”

Dr. Mustacchia graduated from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, completing his residency and fellowship training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He is a board certified internist and gastroenterologist with academic interests that include acute and chronic liver disease.  After some time in private practice, Dr. Mustacchia joined Nassau University Medical Center as chief physician of the gastroenterology division. He was later named gastroenterology fellowship program director, and under his leadership, the teaching program received commendation for substantial compliance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education.

Since 2009, Dr. Mustacchia has also served as a member of the internal medicine residency leadership committee, which oversees all resident and student teaching programs in the department of medicine. In 2011, Dr Mustacchia was elected President of the Medical Staff by his peers, and in that role he has lead a number of institutional initiatives, while serving as a liaison between the medical staff and the executive leadership.

Dr. Mustacchia added: “I am honored, and it is with great enthusiasm that I assume the responsibilities of chair of the department of medicine at NUMC. I look forward to working with a team dedicated to providing quality care to our patient population.”
